Hobart’s AFL Stadium: A Catalyst for Tasmania’s Events Industry
The AFL stadium at Macquarie Point in Hobart represents more than a sporting venue—it has the potential to become a major catalyst for Tasmania’s events and tourism economy. Purpose-built stadiums around the world have proven to be powerful anchors for destination cities, attracting major sporting events, concerts, conferences and international visitors. For Hobart, a modern stadium would dramatically expand the city’s ability to host large-scale events that currently bypass Tasmania due to infrastructure limitations. The positive effect for Tassie as a whole cannot be overstated.
The Stadium will unlock significant economic benefits. Increased visitor numbers, expanded hospitality activity and new opportunities for event organisers could create a ripple effect across the broader tourism sector. Hotels, restaurants, event venues and tour operators would all benefit from the increased flow of visitors attending games, concerts and festivals. A no vote would have sent Tassie backwards and turned this island state into a nice retirement home. We have so much more to offer!
Boxwood is excited about our future. The city already offers exceptional boutique venues, unique landscapes and a strong food and wine culture. Adding a major stadium will round out the offering—allowing Tasmania to host both large-scale entertainment and more intimate destination events.
Corporate events, weddings, conferences and cultural gatherings often grow alongside major attractions. If delivered well, the Macquarie Point stadium will become one of the most significant developments for Tasmania’s tourism and events sector in decades. Congratulations to everyone that has worked so hard to get this across the line!
